NEW SINGLE SHOWCASES BOSTON
Writing an award-winning short story that’s etched in stone outside the T’s Green Street Station didn’t tamp Daria MonDesire’s passion for her hometown. MonDesire’s single, "We Got Heart in Boston," captures the city as only a Boston lover’s could. From traffic jams to triple-deckers; from chairs that call dibs on parking spaces after a snowstorm, to the city’s obsession with Dunkin’, "We Got Heart in Boston" is as Boston as The Garden. (Sorry, TD).
West African drumming takes center stage and induces anyone within earshot to become a mover and a shaker. Irish tin whistle enlivens the intro, and beckons throughout. "We Got Heart in Boston" morphs from city anthem to a raucous night out. Sing-in-the-shower voices and hips that lie, come on down. "We Got Heart in Boston" celebrates Boston as a fun-loving, diverse, and welcoming city.
MonDesire has a Boston accent gifted by Catholic elementary schools in Roxbury, and by a mother born in Boston. Girls’ Latin School, now Boston Latin Academy, and Bennington College honed her assured hand with lyrics and melody. MonDesire is a MacDowell Fellow whose song rocks out an insouciant snub to the King’s English.
“Hollywood likes making films with White actors mimicking a Boston accent”, MonDesire says. “But when Black actors portray Bostonians, not one has a Boston accent. That’s absurd. Black New Yorkers have New York accents, and nobody blinks. Most of my extended family have a Boston accent. They don’t go around saying, ‘wicked’, but they haven’t yet found an “R” they’re fond of.”
MonDesire’s daughter, Gabrielle, joins her on the song’s refrain.
“I do not sing,” says MonDesire, “even though I did. Gabrielle is the one with great vocals. But she was raised in northern Vermont and Montreal. No Boston accent, alas. And her voice was just too posh for the party.”
